Just like to set up a radar thread and see what systems you have.
My car has a K40 bw200 installed from the BMW accessory catalog, it looks like this
(The face plate of mine is missing)
It gets triggered easily from speed signs and works great in rural counties where laser isn't used.

I eschew radar detectors of the SBCD.
Shit Box Cloaking Device.
You see, my car doesn't look like it could actually get to legal speed. So cops assume I must be doing the limit when they're sitting beside the road/blasting past me.

No car, and I would never own a radar detector. I have no need or want for one. Plus, they're illegal here.

No radar detectors, jail for reckless, annual vehicle inspections and some of the lowest speed limits in the country. Good ole VA - Oppo wonderland.
at least we have the most lax gun laws, so that's a plus.

Used to run Valentine but that didn't help when I got shot with laser. I gave up the detectors and speed with people in front of me to run interference - I see brake lights and I slow down. No ticket in the last 14 years (knock wood) although a bunch of close calls.
If I was going on a long road trip, I'd run the Valentine and a CB Radio.

Ah so that's why John Denver likes West Virginia better than best Virginia.

I'm pretty sure that's how I got away in my corolla several times.

I have a passport 8500 that's hardwired into my car so it doesn't waste a 12v outlet

I got the radar detector with the car but I am not much of a lead foot Larry, the sea of red brakes lights trick saved me a few times.

Valentine One. Laser Interceptor Quad, 2 heads on the front and 2 on the rear.

I run a cheapo beltronics vector 940 for long trips.
Otherwise, its technically illegal to have one suction cupped to the windshield here... so its a risk unless I had it mounted otherwise.
Also, I am quite surprised BMW offered a radar detector.

I'm down in VaBeach so that's a hike for me. I do plan on taking the Stringbean up to a Richmond C&C since I've heard they're pretty impressive.

I am amaze this detector is hardwired and installed under the dash. The first owner really went all out. The only options unticked were the v12, rear power seats, and EDC suspension. Do you get false alarms with the vector 940?
![]() 03/28/2015 at 21:03 |
|
Yes. Any detector can pick up and give off false indicators. The higher end models like Valentines n' what not have better methods of discerning real from false.
In your case, sensitivity adjustment is akin to highway vs city mode on modern detectors.
I've seen false alarms range from common sources like store fronts (security systems / automatic door openers) to crazy sources like blind spot warning systems and cruise control radar.

Cobra XR930 or something. It's pretty basic but it detects laser pretty well.

I have a Cobra with bluetooth (that I never ever use) It's suspended from my rearview mirror and the electric tied in with the 12v in the compass inside the mirror so there is no extra wiring. Completely invisible through the windshield and you have to bend down and look up at the ceiling through the side windows to see it.

passport 9500ix, and I use Escort Live as well. Here on the east coast it's popular enough that cops are generally marked.

Passport 9500xi hardwired, I also have my old Beltronics V955 I ran simultaneously on my recent cross country road trip. That was fun!

How do you like the Laser Interceptor setup? I'd like to run jammers, but I don't know about the install.

20/40 on both sides.

Escort RedLine, formerly running in tandem with Trapster, but now I just use Escort's speed trap service. Very useful when traveling to places like Virginia, because the RedLine is undetectable by RDD units (I just hide it in a tissue box on the dash).

How decent is trapster as a standalone trap service?
![]() 03/28/2015 at 22:04 |

Trapster has been deactivated, since Jan 1.

I used to have an Escort Redline but sold it since I got a Valentine One (that can indicate the direction of the radar gun). And it can be customized quite a bit (use the Android App, it helps a lot).

Another trick is to use a car that doesn't look like it can speed such as an old wagon. I noticed cops tend to target fancy cars even if other cars were speeding around.

Valentine One.
I use it pretty much only on long trips - with new cars having all these new features that interfere with it, like adaptive cruise control, the thing won't STFU.

Like them, but don't get much use out of them. Most places in NC don't have/use laser. Only been hit by laser once (that I know of) and I knew it was coming. I passed by NC trooper sitting on the side of the road on I-85/40. It was blatantly obvious he was shooting the cars about 3/4 mile after they passed him because the road turned right and uphill so he had a clear view of every car. I jumped in the left lane to pass and the V1 started going off alerting laser in front (car in front of me). Laser interceptors started jamming about 3-5 seconds later. I assume he was aiming for the passenger tail light. No ticket, but I had aleady slowed down when the V1 went off. The only real shitty experience is mounting them. My mustang doesn't have a good place to mount them and cutting out your bumper and grille is not a fun experience.

There is an update out that adds k band guard. Sent mine in and had it updated for $50. Almost all false alerts on k band gone.

I can't find a good place to put them in the front of my Focus ST front bumper. That's the biggest reason I haven't gotten a jammer setup yet.

I pulled out my grille and used a vertical mill to cut it out. It was a pain to clamp on a regular Bridgeport mill, but the cuts are nice and even. A Dremel probably would have been easier. Laser Interceptors come with a bracket that is sheet metal and easily bends.
Screws are where the bracket is attached to the grille on the inside of the grille. I've been meaning to paint them black.

Thanks. I just checked on getting the upgrades - they won't let me get just the K-Band Guard, but also like Euro Mode, and some other $hit I'll never use. They want $149.
I guess I'll wait a little longer.

You must have an older model that requires a hardware change. I think the V1 has at least 3 hardware revisions.
